Promise to Allaah

Fatwaa ID: 616

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله و بركاته
Mufti saheb i hope ur doing well,
If someone were to make a promise to allah like, “O Allah i promise i wont do it again” and ends up doing it intentionally, whar will be the consequence to make up for having btoken the promise. Would it same as breaking the oath.
Jazakallah

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A promise and an oath are not the same. If a person breaks a promise, then there is no kaffaarah as done for an oath. However, he should make istighfaar, especially if this promise was with Allaah Ta’aala. He should follow it up with some good deed, such as sadaqah or salaah. In the future, he should be cognizant of the gravity of his words and uphold the promise to the best of his abilities.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
