Punishment of a slanderer

Fatwaa ID: 899

What is the punishment of a person who slanders?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Shari’ah has emphasized the importance of maintaining the bond of brotherhood and looking after the honor and dignity of every Muslim. This allows for the Muslims to prosper and thrive. Violating the honor of a Muslim is a major sin and results in the community breaking apart and the ummah becoming weak. The consequences of such in this life and the next are numerous.

One such heinous act is slandering. It is worse than gheebah/backbiting. Consider the following Hadith to note the severity of this. Rasulullaah ﷺ said,

“Whoever attacks a Muslim by saying something through which he wishes to disgrace him, he will be restrained by Allaah on the bridge over Jahannam until he is acquitted of what he said.” [Abu Dawood 4883]

“If anyone makes an untruthful accusation against a Muslim (i.e., slanders him), he will be made by Allaah to dwell in the corrupt fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell until he retracts his statement.” [Abu Dawood 3597]

A Muslim must watch every single statement of his. They are documented and he will be accountable for them. If he had violated or attacked the honor of a Muslim, he will have to pay him back on the Day of Judgment with his good deeds.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
