Qadha of multiple Ramadhans and Shawwal fasts

Fatwaa ID: 2368

Question:
I missed two days of fasting in Ramadhan due to menstruation and I have missed 15 days of fasting from the previous Ramadhans. In order to obtain the reward of fasting six days in Shawwal, must i make up all 17 fasts or only two?In addition to this, I forgot to keep the intention to fast for some days of Ramadhan, must I estimate the count and make them up? If yes should I do this also before fasting the six days of Shawwal?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Each Ramadhan and Shawwaal is counted separately. Thus, in order to obtain the rewards of one set of six days of Shawwal, one would have to complete the Ramadhan of that year. If she has outstanding fasts of previous years, they would not be counted for this year. Thus, in the enquired situation, only two fasts would have to be made up prior to fasting the six of Shawwaal.
  2. What do you mean by “forgot to keep the intention”? If you are referring to the verbal intention, there is no basis to that. Intention is an action of the mind/heart. You may revert to us with clarification if necessary. Nonetheless, if a fast was not valid or did not count, then you would have to complete those first to acquire the rewards of the six.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
