Fatwaa ID: 1453
Question:
Assalamu Alaykum Mufti Sahib,
I have a question regarding a previous Fatwa uploaded on the website on January 28th 2023, question regarding sleeping alone at home, the Fatwa states this is permissible.
I had previously heard of a Hadith which doesn’t allow for a person to travel alone and sleep alone, online sources say the Hadith is in Musnad Ahmad.
Based on this Hadith wouldn’t it be impermissible/discouraged to sleep alone in a house Mufti Sahib? Or what is the correct understanding of the Hadith according to Hadith scholars?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
The Hadith you refer to is as follows,
عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما أن النبيَّ صلَّى اللهُ عليهِ وسلَّمَ نهى عن الوِحدةِ أنْ يبيتَ الرجلُ وحده أو يسافرَ وحده
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (R) narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ advised against being alone: sleeping alone and traveling one. [Ahmad 5650]
While the chain of transmission of the above narration is saheeh, its text is shaadh. Most narrations found in other hadith works with this chain do not mention the portion about sleeping. Even if the narration is accepted, then too the scholars advise that this is an advice from Nabi ﷺ in consideration of our well-being. It is not a religious prohibition. As long as relative safety is found and a person’s mental and/or emotional health is not affected, there is no problem in sleeping alone in a house.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
