Qurbaani age and teeth

Fatwaa ID: 1349

Question:
Assalamualaikum,

Is there a minimum age for a cow or goat to be valid for quarbani?

Does the animal needs to be teething to be valid for the qurbani?

If a cow is 2.5 years old, healthy but no teeth grown yet, is it valid for qurbani?

Jazakallahu khairan

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. The minimum age for cattle for qurbaani is two years. The minimum age for goats and sheep is one year. A healthy sheep of six months or more that looks like a one year old will be permitted.
  2. The general principle is that if an animal does not have its teeth or majority of it, then it will not be suitable for qurbaani. However, if the absence of the teeth is not deemed to be a deficiency nor is it preventing the animal from eating like its counterparts, then it will be permissible to slaughter such an animal for qurbaani.
  3. If a cow is 2.5 years old and healthy but it has not teethed yet, yet it eats like any other cow of that age without difficulty or resulting in deficiency, then it will be permissible to make qurbaani of it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
