Random draw

Fatwaa ID: 1637

Aslm respected mufti saheb
A query from a sister
My child is having a stall for a market day at school. They want to write down all the names of those who purchase from them on a list and then randomly select a name from that list to win a prize.
Will this be allowed?

Also, can they then advertise beforehand that they will be having this initiative

Jazakallah khair

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. The above is permissible. The draw is voluntary. The customers are purchasing items, not entries. Thus, this will not constitute gambling.
  2. The draw may be advertised beforehand. That may be an incentive for more sales.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
