Reciting ر like an r

Fatwaa ID: 1905

Assalamu Alaikum,

In regards to reading Qur’an, if you pronounce the letter ر like the English r, is that sufficient or do we have to learn how to roll it and pronounce it like the Arabs?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

No, that is not sufficient. It is incorrect to recite the Arabic ر as an English r. It is necessary to recite the Qur’aan as revealed and as recited by Nabi ﷺ. Active and genuine effort must be made to learn to recite the Qur’aan as it should be recited. To be negligent and careless in this regard and to recite however one wishes will render one sinful. The Qur’aan is the book and words of Allaah Ta’aala. Time, effort, energy and even funds must be dedicated towards learning and bonding with the Qur’aan. It is a journey of love.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
