Question:
Assalamu alaikum Mufti saab

Can you please clarify my doubt…i bought a dress for wedding function,i wore it for the function at the end of the day i felt its too heavy and i cant manage so i returned with the shop Keeper,he didnt ask anything and i exchanged with another dress. Before buying i didnt have the Intention of exchanging.

My question is…did i cheat him?

Jazak Allahu khayran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If the above reflects the reality of the matter, i.e., you had no intention of returning or exchanging the dress at the time of purchase or at the time of wearing it for the function, then your exchanging of it is not unethical. You did not cheat the business owner. This is obviously provided that you did not place or result in any deficiency in the dress.
If you did have the intention of exchange at the time of purchase or when wearing it for the function, then your actions were unethical.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
