Returning stolen item and more

Fatwaa ID: 2051

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
If someone stole something from me, and because of that I had to buy the same thing again, do they need to give back what they stole AND the money, or only want they stole?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

If an item is stolen from someone, then the thief will have to return that item only or its value if it perishes. He does not have to return or pay anything else. If the owner had purchased a replacement after the item was stolen, then the thief is not responsible nor obligated to reimburse that.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
