Rights of the foster mother

Fatwaa ID: 1999

Assalaamu alaykum. What rights do foster children have over their milk mother?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The foster mother deserves to be respected and honored. Nabi ﷺ showed great respect to his foster mother, Sayyidah Haleemah as-Sa’diyyah (R). When she visited him on one occasion, he ﷺ spread his shawl for her to sit on. Aside from being respected and honored, she does not enjoy the other rights that a biological mother enjoys. However, it will be advisable for a person to visit his foster mother from time to time and look after her well-being. He may consider giving her gifts. He will be rewarded greatly for this.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
