Ring for the groom

Fatwaa ID: 339

Question:
As salaamu alaikum
Would appreciate some advise regarding purchase of a ring for our groom.
I know men are only allowed to wear silver.
Can it be sterling silver?
Are they allowed a stone (not necessarily diamond).
I have seen learned men wear rings with a coloured stone.
What does shariah permit?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, rings do not hold any significance in a marriage in Islam. It permissible to gift rings but there should not be any belief attached to it. Nevertheless, according to the Hanafi legal school, a man is permitted to wear silver or silver plated rings only. Sterling silver is permissible. The silver content in the ring may not exceed 4.374 grams. As far as the stone is concerned, there is no restriction. Any stone or gem may be used.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
