As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh respected Mufti sb.
Can you please shed light on the topic of giving sadaqah to people who belong to the family of Rasool Allah ﷺ.
If a family is in need of financial assistance due to a major setback should we first inquire about their family lineage first?
A friend contacted me regarding giving sadaqah to a family whose father recently passed away suddenly and left behind a wife and small children. Their family and friends are collecting funds for them.
Friend wants to know whether she should ask about their family lineage first or just go ahead and assist them without inquiring about their family background.
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
May Allaah Ta’aala make it easy for the family in reference and all those who are assisting them.
Due to their nobilty, it is not permissible to give zakaah to the Ahlul Bayt. They may however receive nafl sadaqah. In the enquired situation, if you wish to give them your zakaah and you feel that they may be from the Ahlul Bayt, then you may enquire about their status from their family. If they happen to be from the Ahlul Bayt, you may give them nafl sadaqah instead. That too is virtuous.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
