Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh Respected Mufti Sahab,
How strictly should we deal with our 10 year old boy in the matter of Salah? Should we strictly make him pray all 5, or can we be lenient and let him do as many as he wants? In our place, during summer, the Fajr is early and Isha is late around 11, so those 2 Salahs are very challenging for him.
And what about Sunnahs? Should we make him do all 12+ Witr, or just Fard Salah of each time would suffice at this age?
From what age should we be dealing strictly with him for Salah, to pray all i.e., Fard Salahs, Sunnah Muakkadah and Witr?
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
Salaah is our connection with Allaah Ta’aala. It is an intimate conversation we have with Him. It is a solution to our problems and issues. Children must be taught this from a young tender age. They must be nurtured upon this.
Rasulullaah ﷺ said,
“Command your children to perform salaah when they are seven years old, and adopt disciplinary measures upon them for it (salaah) when they are ten years old; and separate between them in their beddings.” [Abu Dawood 495]
Once children reach the age of ten, the parents must ensure that they are performing all five salaahs appropriately on time. Negligence and leniency in this is not permissible. Prior to the age of ten, there was a scope; it was a time of encouragement only. Now, irrespective of how difficult, that parents must strictly enforce it. They must pray each salaah on time. Here too, love and wisdom must be used. The more importance the parents show and nurture, the better for the children. They should also be encouraged to pray the sunnahs regularly.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
