Question:
Assalamu alaykum,
During a jummu’ah khutbah, are congregants expected to send salawaat on the Prophet, peace be upon him, when the khateebs recites the durood? Similarly, is it permissible to say ‘امين’ when the khateeb makes du’a?
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
According to the Hanafi legal school, the salawaat and the aameen of the Jumu’ah congregants should not be verbalized during the khutbah. It should be said in one’s mind only. By doing this, one will observe the obligation of remaining silent during the khutbah and also the command of sending salawaat.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
