Question:
Assalamualaikum Mufti Sahiban
I wanted to ask you about something that has recently happened in my family.
My uncle said to his daughter that he has become catholic. It was confirmed with, He said it to scare his family as he is a religious person and he wants his family to be practicing too.
His family tries their best to practice islam but he is a little strict.
Just wanted to find out if these kind of words affect anybody.
As my aunty is a little stressed thinking is their nikah valid now?
Further clarification
He practices Islam alhamdulillah.. thing is his daughters have started going to.university and they wear western modest clothes.. but he wants them to wear abaya.. they always have conflicts amongst each other. He said I have become catholic now as Allah doesnt answer my prayers and you dont cover yourselves
He said this to emotionally blackmail them
Could you please tell me whether he became kafir due to his statement.
Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.
We take note of the details of your query. The statement in reference constitutes kufr. However, as he has clarified, he is still within the fold of Islam. Notwithstanding this, he must make sincere tawbah and istighfaar and recite his shahaadah again. He should strictly refrain from making such statements in the future. We understand that his purpose was good but there are other ways of dealing with situations.
And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
