Saying: Ya Shaykh Abdul Qaadir Jilaani shayan lillaah

Fatwaa ID: 1886

Question:
Assalamu alaikum,

I had a question regarding a gathering I went to. The ladies were asking us to recite ‘ya shaikh Abdul qadir jilaani shayin lillahi’.
I didn’t recite this as I felt very uneasy about it. So wanted to ask if this “dua” comes under shirk or not and was it ok for the women to recite it?

Jazakillah Khair

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, the issues of tawheed are fundamental to us. We do not make du’aa except to Allaah Ta’aala. No one can help us or give us anything except Allaah Ta’aala. The dead have no power to benefit their ownselves, let alone others.

Allaah Ta’aala says,

“And do not invoke besides Allaah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.” (Yunus v.106)

Rasulullaah ﷺ said,

إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلِ اللَّهَ وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنْتَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللَّهِ
“When you ask, ask Allaah, and when you seek help, seek help from Allaah.” (Tirmidhi 2516)

Shaykh ‘Abdul Qaadir al-Jaylaani (R) was a great wali of Allaah Ta’aala. However, he has no divine powers. He cannot do anything for himself nor others. He cannot help or benefit anyone. He is dead and cannot even hear those who are calling upon him. How foolish are those that invoke him.

Nonetheless, it is shirk to say “Ya Shaykh Abdul Qaadir Jilaani shayan lillaah”. It is shirk to believe that he can benefit or give you something. Those who have said such an abhorrent utterance should renew their imaan and make sincere istighfaar and tawbah.

We commend you for your ghayrah of imaan which prevented you from uttering words of shirk. Be grateful to Allaah Ta’aala for it. Moving forward, you should avoid such gatherings. Advise those that attend as well to avoid and also be careful. These are the gatherings of the Ahlul Bid’ah. Our surroundings and environment has an effect on us. We have been advised to distance ourselves from such people.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
