Scented hand wipes in ihraam

Question:
Asalaam Alaikum,

I’m in search of guidance on this issue, In sha Allah. My family and I recently returned from performing Umrah, Alhumdulillah. On the way from Meeqat to Makkah, unfortunately my son (8.5 years old) and I used scented hand wipes to clean our hands after eating. Could we please advise on how to deal with damm in our cases, and how much it would be? Could it be paid to a charity? Jazak Allah Khair for your assistance in this matter.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We apologize for the delayed response. May Allaah Ta’aala accept your ‘umrah and ‘ibaadaat. May He invite you back time after time.

We take note of the details of your query. Hand wipes are used for the purpose of cleaning. It is not used for its scent nor would anyone regard it to be a scent. Notwithstanding this, using scented things are from the restrictions of the ihraam. Accordingly, in the enquired situation, you will have to give sadaqah only. Sadaqah is equivalent to the Sadaqatul Fitr amount. This is approximately 15-20 riyals. The sadaqah must be given to someone that is poor and needy, eligible to receive zakaah funds. You do not need to give dam. However, istighfaar should be made.

ولو غسل رأسه ولحيته بالخطمي، فعليه الدم عند أبي حنيفة رحمه الله تعالى، وعندهما عليه الصدقة. وفي المنتقى: هشام عن محمد رحمه الله تعالى: إذا غسل المحرم يده بأشنان فيه طيب، فإن كان إذا نظروا إليه قالوا: هذا أشنان ففيه الصدقة، وإن قالوا : هو طيب فعليه الدم
