Selling donated animals for cash

Fatwaa ID: 1243

Assalamualaikum ww
Regarding the masalah you asked about the Saqah animlas
We run an orphanage and people send live animals for sadqah which at times are above our needs.
Can we transform these into money by selling them to Qurbani clients and use that money for other needs

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala accept all your services and reward you abundantly. This is indeed a great commendable work. May He enable you to carry on with khayr and ‘aafiyah.

When donors send live animals as donations to the orphanage, the trustees are made responsible and entrusted to do as they deem to be appropriate, keeping in mind the best interests of the orphanage. Accordingly, if the trustees feel that selling it to qurbaani clients or others and thereby acquiring cash is more beneficial, then they may do that. That will be permissible. However, it should be noted that this is for general donations. If a donor makes a donation for a specific cause or provides specific instructions, then those instructions will need to be maintained.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
