Sins are haraam, major and minor sins

Fatwaa ID: 1738

Asalamualaikum Mufti Sahib, I hope you are well.

1) Are all sins Haram?

2) What’s the difference between major and minor sins? Please provide examples of each.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. I am not sure if this is a real question or a troll. A sin is something that has been prohibited by the Shari’ah. To engage in a sin is disobedience to Allaah Ta’aala. That is obviously haraam.
  2. The classification of sins into major and minor is a legal issue. The purpose is not for you to choose where you can disobey Allaah Ta’aala. Rather, it is necessary for you to stay away from all sins. Look at who you are disobeying, not how. Furthermore, to regard any sin to be small and insignificant renders it a major sin. The prohibitions of Shari’ah as well as its injunctions are there for our own benefit.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
