Skin care on private areas, looking at it, sleeping in the nude

Fatwaa ID: 1728

Assalamu alaykum Mufti Sahib. A sister wanted to know regarding skin care, if a person decides to massage her genital areas, breasts etc by looking at her skin carefully or she takes time keeping her skin open, etc is this something that is permissable to do so as long as she’s alone and nobody is there with her, will she be sinful if she takes time with skin care when it comes to sensitive areas?

  1. Regarding genital areas, is it correct that a person weakens their eyesight when one constantly looks at her bottom whilst scrubbing/massaging, etc.
  2. If a lady sleeps or lies down nakid as long as she’s alone, is this something impermissible to do.

Jazakumullah Khayran

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. We understand that the sister in question will be massaging herself, not that another person will be massaging her. It is permissible for a woman to massage her body including her breasts and around her genital area for skin care. She may uncover the areas provided that there is no one else present besides her husband. Likewise, she may take as long as she wants. However, it should be noted if the massaging results in masturbation or sexual stimulation of her vagina, then that will not be permissible.
  2. No. That is not true.
  3. It is against hayaa (modesty) to sleep naked. While she may be alone, there are angels around. She should act modestly in their presence. Likewise, she should manifest hayaa with Allaah Ta’aala as well. Nonetheless, if she does sleep in the nude, then she will not be sinful.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
