Social media and music

Fatwaa ID: 1611

I hope you’re doing well
I have a couple questions about social media

  1. I’ve heard a lot of people say that using music on instatageam is a way to increase interaction on each post. Basically music in the background as people look at your post or video. Am I allowed to use music in my posts to increase engagement ? (Since I’m not dancing or enjoying it, instead I’m using it for a purpose to reach a certain goal)
  2. Is using Nasheeds ok for the same purpose; like instead of foreign songs, I could be using Islamic songs. And not only does this increase my enagagement but it also mostly goes to the Muslim community and anyone else who also listens or prefers nasheeds instead of music
  3. Sometimes it is really hard to type a lot when explaining something online – for example I’m making a video about eating eggs and then doing a workout and then going out. I type out “breakfast” on the screen/post but also want to explain the pros and cons or any other detail but it’s extremely frustrating to type paragraphs on the screen and doesn’t look good either. I cannot put it In the captions because no one will read a super long one and it makes sense to have info as you watch a video. So my question here is, would it be ok for me to record my voice ? Like I would have my voice explain things in the background while I show the thing I want to show in a video.

Jazakallah for your time
(Sorry for the long message )

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We take note of the details of your queries. The answers to your questions are as follows:

  1. While your purpose and goal may be good, it is necessary that the means are also good. It is not permissible to use haraam means to achieve a good purpose. Nevertheless, it will not be permissible for you to use music in your posts on social media. You will be sinful for that. Music is haraam irrespective whether you are dancing to it or not. Likewise, you will be sinful for every person that listens to the music.
  2. You may use permissible nasheeds in the background of your videos.
  3. You may use your voice to explain things in the background. You must ensure that you are not making your voice unnecessarily alluring.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
