Star symbol in the mus’haf

Fatwaa ID: 258

Question:
Salam alaykum.
Their is usually a star like symbol at the end of every ayat in the Quran. In many masjid around the world they are built into the walls as designs and into the tiles of the roofs.

Is this symbol similar to the jewish star of David( dawud)

What is the wisdom behind this star like symbol

۞
[Uthmani print]

Answer:

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The symbol in reference is not the Star of David. When used in the mus’haf after verses, it is to indicate towards something. The exact meaning would depend on the publisher of that mus’haf. You may refer to their glossary at the end.
In the mus’haf screenshot you have shared, it indicates towards the end of a rubu’, 1/4 of a hizb. As for it being on masjid walls and roofs, it is simply a geometric design. It does not have any meaning, significance or religious connotation. There are many other shapes and designs used as well.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
