Question:
السلام عليكم
Is it Permissible to use medication with stem cells?
Specifically eye drops?

Jazakallah

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is not clear what kind of stem cells you are referring to. If you are referring to human stem cells, which is perhaps the most common one, then it will not be permissible in general conditions.

Allaah Ta’aala says in the Qur’aan:

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي ءَادَمَ وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًا
“And We bestowed dignity on the children of Aadam and provided them with rides on the land and in the sea, and provided them with a variety of good things and made them much superior to many of those We created.” [Al-Israa: 70]

The usage of human body parts is contrary to the honor of human beings. Hence, the jurists have ruled that it is impermissible, in general circumstances, to use body parts, including cells. This prohibition is extended to medicine as well unless there is a genuine need and there are no adequate alternatives available.
