Stepsiblings

Fatwaa ID: 1807

Question:
Assalamualaikum
If two people were step siblings before but then the parents separated.
1) Can the siblings get married?
2) Can the stepfather marry the step daughter?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Stepsiblings, i.e., those who do not share a single parent, are non-mahrams in all cases. The laws of hijaab are fully applicable between them. It is permissible for them to get married to one another irrespective of whether their parents are together or separated.
  2. If the stepfather had consummated the marriage with the mother of his stepdaughter, then it will never be permissible for him to marry his stepdaughter. She is a mahram to him.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
