Student in haydh reading the qaidah

Fatwaa ID: 1977

Can a student who is menstruating continue reading the qaidah that also contains a couple of surahs from the Quran on the back, or should she refrain?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is permissible for a female student to continue studying and reading the qaidah during her menses. Letters, words and short phrases would not be regarded as Qur’aan. Hence, the prohibition of reciting the Qur’aan during the menses would not apply to them. However, if there are Qur’aanic verses or surahs in the qaidah, perhaps towards the end, then those portions cannot be recited together as tilaawah. Rather, the student may break it down into pieces and recite them as words or small phrases without the intention of tilaawah. Likewise, these portions specifically cannot be touched. A pen or styus may be used instead.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
