Studying Qira’at while menstruating

Fatwaa ID: 1250

Question:
Assalamu alaikum. From a hanafi fiqh perspective, if a lady is studying qiraa’ah and is having her periods, is it permissible to continue reading Qur’an during studies because there is the stopping/pausing/breaking in reading (in the qiraa’ah methods that are currently being studied in the 10 Qiraa’ahs)?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, it is not permissible for a woman to verbally recite the Qur’aan whilst menstruating. This prohibition is applicable to students of Qira’at as well. Although they are pausing or repeating portions to recite the various options, they do all this with the intention of tilaawah. Thus, it will be prohibited for her to recite in such manners as well. She may however listen to other students reciting, if they are studying together.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
