Tahajjud in congregation

Fatwaa ID: 2306

Question:
Is it permissible to pray tahajjud in congregation during Ramadan in the Hanafi madhab?

Is tahajjud considered a sunnah prayer or Nafl prayer?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. According to the Hanafi legal school, it is makrooh to perform Tahajjud Salaah in congregation if the congregation consists of four or more people behind the imaam. If the congregation is smaller than that, then it will be excused. This reprehension is extended to the blessed month of Ramadhan as well. A Hanafi should adhere to the authoritative teachings of his legal school. He should perform Tahajjud Salaah individually or with up to four people only without publicizing it. That is better for him.
  2. Tahajjud is a nafl salaah from a legal classification.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
