Takbeer twice when joining salaah late

Fatwaa ID: 305

Question:
Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu,

  1. When we join a jamat after mising a rakat and the jamat is lets say in ruku or sajda, should we say takbeer twice? One for joining the salah and one for which ever action the imam is doing?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

When one joins the salaah late and finds the imaam in a position other than the qiyaam, it is necessary for him to first say the Takbeerah Tahreemah while standing. This takbeer is for the commencement of the salaah. Without this, the salaah does not start. Thereafter, he should say the second takbeer to go into position of the imaam. If the first takbeer, i.e., the Tahreemah is missed, then the salaah will be invalid. Many late comers tend to be unaware or negligent regarding this. One should take heed of this and ensure that this is acted upon.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
