Taking pictures during Hajj and Umrah

Fatwaa ID: 1470

Question:
Assalamu alaykum. If an individual was to take pictures whilst performing umrah or hajj, would this invalidate the ritual or would it just be a disliked act?
Jazakumullah Khayran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Taking pictures whilst performing Hajj or Umrah will not invalidate the ritual. However, it is against the sanctity of the place and also against the devotion of a person. While in Hajj or Umrah, a person must dedicate and focus all his attention to Allaah Ta’aala.

Frankly speaking, nobody cares about the pictures you take. You yourself will probably never look back at the pictures. There are hundreds of pictures available online that are better than yours. There is no need for you to take pictures. You were invited by Allaah Ta’aala. Not everyone gets that chance. Take advantage of it and value it.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
