Talking during khutbah

Fatwaa ID: 585

Question:
Assalamualaikum, I have a couple of questions about Jumuah.

  1. If you accidentally talk during the khutbah, do you have to pray 4 rakaat after instead of 2?
  2. If I talk in the bathroom after the khutbah has already started do I have to pray 4 rakaat after the khutbah instead of just 2?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, according to the Hanafi legal school, it is impermissible to talk or engage in other activities during the Jumu’ah khutbah. One must listen attentively. Notwithstanding this, talking does not affect the validity of the Jumu’ah Salaah. In the enquired situations, you will perform two rak’ahs with the imaam only. Your Jumu’ah will be valid. However, istighfaar should be made.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
