Tawaaf salaah, virtues multiplied, sunnahs when traveling

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
For one going to umrah, is it permissible to pray anywhere behind maqam ibrahim (in the mataf area, or in the floors above it) to complete the sunnah 2 rakah, or does it have to be in the mataf area next to the kaaba? Also, there is a hadith about 1 salah at the Haram being like 100,000 salahs elsewhere – does the same apply for nawafil and sunnah prayers or is it just for the fardh? Furthermore, since the prophet SAWS would not pray the sunnahs of dhuhr, isha or maghrib when he travelled, do we treat the Haram in the same way or should we pray the sunnahs for more reward? Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. We understand that you are referring to the two rak’ahs performed after Tawaaf. This is waajib according to the Hanafi legal school. It should preferably be performed anywhere in the Masjid, although it will be valid if performed elsewhere as well.
  2. The scholars have differed regarding this. The authoritative position is that it is referring to fardh salaah only. The nafl and sunnah salaahs performed in one’s home is better and more virtuous, as understood from other Ahaadith.
  3. Who said the prophet ﷺ would not perform the sunnahs while traveling? If you are able to perform your sunnahs without unnecessary inconvenience while traveling, in the Haram or elsewhere, then you should perform it. You will be rewarded greatly. Salaah performed in the Haram, including sunnah and nafl, are more virtuous than elsewhere.
