Teenage with nisaab without a source of income

Fatwaa ID: 2115

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ
‎ If I am a teenager that has recently passed the nisab amount without a source of income do I have to pay zakat, and when. Also am I allowed to pay zakat during ramadan if I passed nisab a month ago

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala place barakah in your wealth and keep you content and happy in both lives. We commend you for your consciousness in regards to this matter.

  1. The liability of zakaah is dependent on your zakaatable assets, not your status of employment. If a person does not have a job or a source of income but has zakaatable assets, then he will have to pay zakaah. Zakaah can be paid from the assets that he has or in kind from other assets.
  2. The day your zakaatable assets reached the nisaab amount is your zakaah date. You must document and remember this date. Make sure to document the Islamic date, not the Gregorian. You will not pay zakaah the first time you reach it. You will assess your wealth the following year on that same date. If you still own nisaab amount or more in zakaatable assets together, then you will pay 2.5% of the total in zakaah to the poor and needy. If you own less than the nisaab amount, then you will not pay anything. Your zakaah date will then reset to the next time you own the nisaab amount and the same will follow. For most, Alhamdulillaah, the zakaah date remains the same annually.
  3. You must discharge your zakaah on your zakaah date or as soon as possible. It will not be permissible to unnecessarily delay it. Waiting for Ramadhan is not a valid reason. That being said, you may pay your zakaah in advance for the following year in Ramadhan. When your zakaah date comes later on and you assess your wealth, you may deduct the amount you paid in advance.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
