Toilet facing the qiblah

Fatwaa ID: 1636

Question:
Assalamualaikum Mufti Sahab.
Someone recently purchased a house in the USA, after a few months they realized that all the (3) toilet seats in the house are either facing the Qibla or backing the Qibla. They heard from someone that it’s a sin to sit on the toilet seat in the position which is either facing Qibla or backing it. They want to fix it but plumbing and construction is pretty expensive in the USA and since they just bought the house they do not have sufficient funds.
Their questions are:

  1. Is it true and authenticated that we can not face the Qibla while on the toilet seat (unintentionally)
  2. If it’s true, then in their case – what’s the best solution to fix this issue ? (being within financial situation that they are in).

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. According to the Hanafi legal school, it is prohibitively disliked to face the qiblah or turn one’s back towards the qiblah when relieving oneself. This is applicable indoors as well as outdoors.
  2. It will be sufficient to turn it a few degrees from the qiblah. You do not need to renovate the entire bathroom. For the time being, you should turn yourself to the right or left slightly when you sit on the toilet. That will be sufficient.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
