Travel insurance

Fatwaa ID: 1320

Question:
Assalaamualaikum can we take travel insurance if travelling to Morocco from UK as the cost of medical service there might be expensive? We’ve never taken travel insurance before so not sure if we should.

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Conventional insurance is haraam due to the many prohibited elements found therein. This prohibition is also applicable to travel insurance. We place our trust and reliance upon Allaah Ta’aala. He will take care of us. However, if one is legally forced to take out an insurance policy or there is a genuine need, then he will be excused to take out the minimum required amount. Istighfaar should be made. In most cases during travels, there is no legal obligation or genuine need. Hence, it must be avoided in general circumstances.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
