Tummy tuck, bariatric surgery, botox

Fatwaa ID: 1102

Question:
Assalamualaikum wr wb,

Is cosmetic surgery such as a tummy tuck (to get rid of loose skin post pregnancy/ weight loss) allowed?

Is bariatric surgery allowed?

Is botox allowed?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. In principle, it is not permissible to undergo a cosmetic surgery for purposes of beautification. That will fall under changing the creation of Allaah Ta’aala. However, if there is a genuine need, a defect or a medical or health condition, then as a corrective surgery, one will be excused to undergo such a surgery under the instruction of a competent doctor. A liposuction, or tummy tuck, will be permissible in cases where alternatives are not feasible or beneficial and this procedure has been advised by a reliable competent doctor.
  2. A bariatric surgery involves making physical changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight. Portions of the stomach and related parts are removed or tampered with. This surgery is not permissible unless there is a genuine need due to severe health risks. Likewise, this can only be opted for when all other procedures and medications have failed or are certain to fail. This must be done under the prescription of a reliable and competent medical professional.
  3. Botox for beauty enhancement purposes are impermissible irrespective of their contents or ingredients. It is a form of changing the creation of Allaah Ta’aala. The preventative argument does not hold merit nor substantial research. If there is a medical reason or need for corrective purposes for the present, then that is a different situation. You may provide details and we will advise accordingly.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
