Umrah related queries

Fatwaa ID: 1791

Assalamu Alaikum
Questions from someone going to Umrah:

  1. At what point should someone wear their ihram? If someone has a layover in Egypt, will it be alright for them to adorn the ihram there and pray 2 rakat? What would be the following steps?
  2. Can men wear boxers under the ihram during umrah?
  3. If a woman finds it difficult to navigate with the cap and niqab, can she wear it before performing Umrah or does she have to wear it with the cap from the time she’s in ihram state?
  4. What are some places that you should visit in Makkah and Madina besides the Haramain? If there’s any guide with the history and significances of these places, it would be wonderful. There are many sources online that aren’t accurate in terms of authenticity.
  5. If someone puts perfume or itr before they enter into ihram, will they be violating the rules?
  6. Is there any Amal besides tilawat and nawafil one can do during Umrah?
  7. If for any reason, someone has to hide that they are going to Umrah with their family from their mom to avoid hurting her since they aren’t able to take her along, will they be sinful? What should they do?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala accept your ‘umrah and make the journey fruitful.

  1. Ihraam must be worn before crossing the ihraam. One may wear it from before as well. In the enquired situation, it may be worn during the layover in Egypt. The two rak’ahs may be performed there as well.
  2. Men may not wear stitched boxers or underwears while in the state of ihraam. Doing so would necessitate a penalty. Alternatively, one may wear an unstitched loin cloth (langot) or an adult diaper.
  3. The prohibition of wearing something which covers and touches the face is applicable for the entire duration of ihraam, not only when performing ‘umrah. One must ensure that the niqaab does not touch the face from the time she enters the state of ihraam until she exits it.
  4. See the booklets here: See the attached file as well.
  5. No. It is advisable to put on fragrance prior to entering the state of ihraam. Nabi ﷺ did so as well.
  6. ‘Umrah is simply making Tawaaf of the Ka’bah, performing two rak’ahs, performing Sa’ee and then cutting the hair. However, while in the blessed lands, you should increase your ‘ibaadah and do as much as you can. Rewards are multiplied.
  7. You do not need to inform anyone that you are going for ‘Umrah. We are not in a position to advise you what you should do. Consult with your family and decide further.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
