Unable to fast virtuous days

Fatwaa ID: 1364

If a person wanted to fast on Arafah but can’t due to being treated for an infection and needing to take medications, will the person get rewarded?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Allaah Ta’aala is Ever Merciful and Generous. If a person genuinely wanted to fast an auspicious day but was unable to due to health reasons, then he will be rewarded as though he had fasted. His genuineness will be measured by his past history and future observances. In the enquired situation, although the person is unable to fast, he should still take advantage of the auspicious moments and increase in other ‘ibaadaat. Fasting is one of the many prescribed actions of this day.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
