Using hair for research

Fatwaa ID: 581

Question:
Can one utilize hair for research study and get paid for it? If one cuts hair at the barbershop, it goes to waste anyway. Is it permissible for it to be used for studies to benefit others and also be compensated for it?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The Shari’ah has honored man and made him sanctified. It is not permissible to derive benefit from the body or parts of a human being except that which has been permitted. Accordingly, it will not be permissible to give away or utilize one’s hair for research study. This prohibition is applicable irrespective of whether one is compensated or not. Unwanted or removed hair should ideally be buried. If that is not feasible, then it should be disposed respectfully.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
