Question:
Does verbal commitment made before marriage from either party count?
Will he/she be answerable to Allah if its not fulfilled?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Unless coupled with oaths or vows, a verbal commitment will count as a promise or agreement. Muslims are encouraged to uphold and honor their promises. It is from the signs of a hypocrite to unnecessarily go against one’s promise. Furthermore, fulfilling agreements and promises, especially in a marriage, is healthy for a relationship, while going against them negatively harms the relationship.
