Virtue of the one who dies during the Hajj or ‘Umrah journey

Fatwaa ID: 1433

Question:
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“Whoever goes out for Hajj and passes away, the reward of Hajj will be written for him until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever goes out for Umrah and passes away, the reward of Umrah will be written for him until the Day of Resurrection. Whoever goes out in Jihad and passes away, the reward of Jihad will be written for him until the Day of Resurrection.”

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُه..
Respected mufti saheb..

Does the above apply to a person that has already concluded his/her hajj & is in madinah & passes away in madinah after hajj?
Or is it applies to a person that passes away during or before performing the hajj?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

There is no doubt that death in Madeenah Munawwarah is virtuous and something that every Muslim aspires. However, the hadith in question does not apply to someone who passes away after performing Hajj. The hadith is in regards to that person who goes out for Hajj, ‘Umrah or Jihaad and passes away enroute. Due to his intention and dedication, he receives the reward of not only doing it once, but time after time until Qiyaamah.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
