Visiting graves

Fatwaa ID: 1073

Question:
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu mufti sahib, is it permissible to visit the grave of a deceased family member at around the time of their passing to tidy their grave and pray for them there? Jazakallah Khair

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is encouraged for one to regularly visit the graves of one’s loved ones as well as Muslims in general so that it serves as reminder for the living and as benefit for the deceased. However, there is no specific time that is encouraged. Similarly, one should not restrict the visit to the death anniversary or around that time. One should visit as convenient without any specification. While there, one may tidy the place and pray for them.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
