Visiting temples that are tourist attractions

Fatwaa ID: 1869

Question:
Assalamu Alaikum wrwb, what is the ruling of visiting temples that are tourist attractions?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

In principle, a person is affected by his surroundings and what he sees and experiences. Temples and similar places are the dens and centers of kufr, shirk and sins. The wrath and anger of Allaah Ta’aala is in such places. How can one feel safe from that? Furthermore, visiting such places may tantamount to honoring them. Accordingly, unless there is a genuine reason, one should not visit or enter churches, temples, etc. It is prohibitively disliked. It is obvious that tourism is not a valid reason. One may not visit temples for tourism purposes.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
