Vocal music

Fatwaa ID: 2154

Question:
Assalaamu Alaikum
Some vocal nasheeds of Muaaz and Mahir Zain literally sound like music
Also some of the vocal war nasheeds of Palestine some like music
Is it permissible to listen to it

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We are not familiar with the nasheeds of the said artists. Hereunder is a brief outline regarding this issue:

There are a couple of issues of consideration for a nasheed to be halaal. The lyrics and the sound effects are perhaps the most important. The details are as follows:

In regards to the lyrics, it must be clean and free from anything haraam or problematic. This includes moral aspects as well as creedal issues. It should ideally be something that is beneficial, not futile.

As for the sounds, it is not permissible to listen to nasheeds that contain prohibited musical instruments. Likewise, it is not permissible to listen to nasheeds that contain sound effects from things other than the prohibited musical instruments that mimic or create similar effects.

As for war songs of Palestine that contain music or resemble music, that too will not be permissible. You may not listen to them. The laws of the Shari’ah apply all throughout.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
