Washing hands before eating

Fatwaa ID: 1960

Question:
Is it Sunnah to wash hands before eating?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

It is mustahabb to wash one’s hands before eating. This is also hygienic and closer to purity. Consider the following Ahaadith,

بركة الطعام الوضوء قبله، والوضوء بعده
“The barakah of food is in washing (the hands) before it and after it.” [Tirmidhi]

من أحب أن يكثر خير بيته فليتوضأ إذا حضر غداؤه وإذا رفع.
“Whoever wishes to enhance the good of his house, let him wash (his hands) when the food is brought and when it is raised.” [Ibn Maajah]

الوضوء قبل الطعام ينفي الفقر, وبعده ينفي اللمم
“Washing prior to eating repels poverty, and washing after eating repels insanity.” [Tabaraani]

Note: The above Ahaadith are suitable for practice despite the dhu’f in them.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
