Watching cartoons with music

Fatwaa ID: 1417

Assalamualykum.mufti saab. How serious is watching cartoons with music for kids. Nowadays every cartoon has music. Kids don’t have their food unless they are watching these cartoons. Please advise regarding this issue. Will it effect their tarbiat? Especially pre school kids. It is hard to keep them busy without gadgets.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

A child’s upbringing starts from a young tender age. If you do not nurture the child upon Islamic values from a young age, then it will be difficult to do so afterwards. There is none to blame then but yourself. If the youthful ages are spent well, then it becomes easier to maintain that as the children grow up.

The harms of watching TV and cartoons in general are well known. The negative effects of it from a spiritual perspective as well as a physical and mental perspective are undeniable. Most cartoons nowadays, as innocent as they may seem, are filled with garbage that leave the children’s imaan and values in question. If you are unable to consider the wellbeing of your children and balance their lives and teach them discipline, then you have failed as a parent.

Your question is very concerning. It is clear that you understand music is haraam, yet you enquire as to how serious it is for your children to disobey Allaah Ta’aala and violate the laws of Shari’ah. Just as it is bad for you, it is bad for them equally, if not more.

Eating is a great ‘ibaadah. You must teach your children to eat in accordance to the sunnah. They should not be watching cartoons while eating. This is harmful. You must put your foot down and ensure that their wellbeing is your priority. Learn to say no.

Raising children is not easy. You must instill discipline in them from a young age. You cannot be so soft that you allow them to do as they wish. At the same time, you should not be so strict that they hate you.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
