Water lantern festival

Fatwaa ID: 1585

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, Can a Muslimah attend a water lantern festival or does it go against the teachings of Islam?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are sensitive to our beliefs and values. We do not engage or take part in religious practices and customs of others. The water lantern festival is a form of worship that is meant to send away disasters and problems and welcome happiness and peace. Accordingly, it is not permissible for a Muslim to attend water lantern festivals. The prohibition is applicable even if one’s intention and purpose is to see and observe the lights. The wrath of Allaah Ta’aala descends on such places. One should stay far away and seek His refuge and protection.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
