What if I can’t fast all 9 days of Dhul Hijjah?

Fatwaa ID: 1320

Question:
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Mufti Sahab

If a person is unable to fast all 9 fasts before Eidul Adha, will he still get rewards for the fasts he keeps as the fasts of Dhul Hijjah or is it a must that he keeps all 9 in order to get the reward or virtue of these days?

جزاك الله خيرا كثيراً

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

May Allaah Ta’aala bless you. The reward of each day of the 9 fasts of Dhul Hijjah are independent. If you can fast all 9 days, that is best. However, if you can only fast a day or so, then that is also good and you will be rewarded abundantly.

The reward of fasting one of these days is equivalent to fasting a year. So if one fasts all 9 days, then his reward will be like one who fasted 9 years. If he fasts 1 day only, then he will be rewarded as fasting 1 year. 2 days will be like 2 years and so forth. It is not necessary to fast all 9 days to acquire the reward of the days fasted.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
