When was the seal of prophethood given to Nabi ﷺ

Fatwaa ID: 1991

Question:

Respected mufti, prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the seal of prophethood. During the journey of Mi’raj Jibraeal Alaihi salam accompanied by Mikaleel Alaihi salam descended and inscribed the seal of prophethood between the blessed shoulder blades of Rasulullah ﷺ as mentioned in Seeratul Mustafa by Hadrat Moulana Muhammad Idrees Khaandhelwi Saahib Rahmatullahi Alaihi, under the chapter “Mi’raaj in Detail” Does that mean he ﷺ was not born with the seal of prophethood and that he received it only on the night of Mi’raj?

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

The scholars and the historians differ regarding when Nabi ﷺ was given the seal of prophethood. Some mention that he was born with it. Others mention that it was given to him as a child when he was with Sayyidah Haleemah as-Sa’diyyah and the angels came and washed his blessed heart. A third view is that it was given to him when he became a prophet. A fourth group mention that he was given this seal during the Mi’raaj journey. The reconciliation between these views, which are supported by various Ahaadith, is that Nabi ﷺ was born with it and then it was revisited and reaffirmed by the angels at each of the above incidents.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
