Wiping over Leather Socks While Traveling

Fatwaa ID: 2159

Question:
Assalamualaykum Mufti saab,

I know there is a day and night limitation upon which one can continue to wipe over the leather sock. What about when on travel? Is the period of when one is allowed to continue wiping over the leather socks extended to 3 days before they are required to wash the feet again? I believe the other madhabs allow this condition. What is the Hanafi ruling?

jazakumullahu khayran

Answer:
In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Wiping over wudhu-friendly socks during wudhu, where applicable, is permissible and valid while a resident as well as when traveling. While a resident, it is permissible for up to a day and a night. While traveling, this is allowed for up to three days and three nights. This is the ruling in the Hanafi legal school as well as the other legal schools.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
