Witr salah – prayed in jamaat? And Wiping over socks

Fatwaa ID: 2158

Hello, assalamualaykum,

Can 3 rakat Witr be performed in jamaat? If so, will it be prayed loudly like all other jamaat salat?

When praying Witr individually, is it a silent or loud prayer?

Finally, I will be traveling on a 15hour flight inshaAllah, in which case it will be impossible for me to perform full wudu with washing feet. Will it be acceptable for me to wipe over normal cotton socks in lieu of washing my feet while on the flight/airport?

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

  1. Witr Salaah is to be performed individually except in the month of Ramadhan. Congregation for it is specific to Ramadhan.
  2. Witr Salaah will be performed inaudibly when performed individually.
  3. No. The mainstream position of the jurists is that wiping over regular cotton socks is invalid. The wudhu would be invalid and thus the salaah performed with it. You may consider thick wudhu-friendly cotton socks or leather socks. We wish to point out that it is not impossible as you have claimed. While somewhat inconvenient, it is totally possibly to make a full wudhu in the plane and airport.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best.
